  1. The social pressures of middle school can lead to intolerable unpleasantness for some students. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2007) documented that suicide, the third-leading cause of death among youths and young adults, rose 8 percent from 2003 to 2004. After years of steadily declining, this is the single largest increase from 1994 to 2004. It is believed that bullying somehow has contributed to the numbers.

  2. Well when I look at those statistics I think to myself: "Why does bullying happen?" Why do kids (that turn into adults) bully each other? Is it always the "bigger kid picking on the smaller kid type of thing?" "Who is most vurnable to get bullied?" Which age group is bullied most frequently?"

    1. "Why does bullying happen?":
Thank you Patrick for your great questions. There is no one reason as to why some people bully others. Some students may bully others because” they want to be popular or the cool kid, they may think that it’s fun, jealousy, or simply because they are unhappy with themselves.

“Why do kids (that turn into adults) bully each other?”
Patrick, if you are speaking about workplace bullying, it is often driven by the need to control the targeted individual (s).

“Is it always the "bigger kid picking on the smaller kid type of thing?" or "Who is most vurnable to get bullied?"
Typical characteristics of victims of bullying are varied:
      • Students who are perceived as quiet, cautious, overly sensitive or easily moved to tears are an easy target for bullies.
      • Boys who are physically weaker than their classmates can be singled out.
      • Girls who are not physically on par with the average girl--this could be either from obesity or being too thin.
      • Victims often have few or no friends perhaps as a result of bullying or because they are more introverted and tend to stay to themselves.

“Which age group is bullied most frequently?"
It is noted that bullying ranges in age and gender. Bullying behavior can start as early as preschool and continue on.
Bullying peaks in Middle School and usually decreases somewhat in High School However, Verbal Bullying may continue throughout all grade levels.

  3. One thing I have learn from experiencing bullying in my life I realized some of the bullying is pressure to fit in. It can be due from being jealous of another kid so they take measures to taunt them so they can bring them down to make them feel better. There is many reasons as to why bullying can occur. It mostly happens from elememtary to middle school but can still lead up to adulthood. Bullying is something that can affect a child or even an adult's daily life.

  4. You are correct about peers wanting to fit in, Pamela. Your classmates can have either a positive or negative effect on you. Sometimes young adults will feel the need to do things they think that their peers are doing or will like. As a result and in order to fit in they may bully others.
